Two very good questions. I'll answer the second one first. Yes, you all are very important. I just want to make sure you feel my love. Shout out to the blogosphere.
To answer the first question... internship recruiting. For those familiar with this process, you'll probably already know without me further explaining. For those not so familiar, let me give you a quick rundown. Basically, during the winter of the first year, students are busy scrambling to secure an internship for the summer. This elusive internship is important, because a) it gives you a chance to try out a new job in a new industry for just a summer b) everyone else is looking for internships so it's part of the culture and c) let's face it, b-school comes down to finding a job. Anyways, as you may gather this can be quite a stressful and busy time. Not only are you expected (operative word here is expected) to keep up with class, but you also need to spend a gazillion hours preparing yourself for interviews.
I'm glad to report, though, that I was able to find an internship and will be in the Bay Area for the summer... Woohooo. But, you're probably still asking, "OK, so I get it. You were busy. Whoop dee dooo. I'm busy too. Doesn't mean I couldn't update my blog." True. The one catch I forgot to mention -- many companies conduct first round interview "on-campus" so that's nice and convenient. But for second round (and usually final round) interviews, you pretty much fly out to the company. No problem when all the companies are in Chicago. Problem when they are not. Hence comes my complication.
So, in 9 days I flew to 6 different cities. Not only that, I criss-crossed the continent too. I started in Chicago, flew to San Francisco, left the next day to Dallas via Las Vegas. Since my flight from SF was delayed, I had to take a red-eye from Vegas to Dallas which arrived at 5AM and my interview was at 10:45 AM. Sweet. Then flew from Dallas to Newark (NJ) then back to Chicago, then to Cleveland. Then a Saturday back in Chicago for one day... woohoo! Then left for LA the next day and came back. 3 days later flew back to the west coast to San Jose and then came back. How do you like them apples?
Anyways, quick story. So, I was supposed to leave San Francisco Monday night to fly to Dallas for an interview. I had to connect through Las Vegas, and as I said above, my flight from SF was delayed so I got into Vegas late and missed the connection. The next flight out of Dallas was at around 12:40AM. So I bummed around for a little bit and when it got nearer to the departure time, I go to the terminal and sit and wait. Well, as I'm waiting along with the other miserable passengers I see this family walking up and the father was really tall. I didn't pay much attention until they got closer and I thought I recognized the guy but couldn't quite place him. Well, the family sits down in the row behind me and then I look over and it dawns on me that this guy looks a lot like the NBA player Jerry Stackhouse. But, I thought, no way, he wouldn't be taking this red-eye flight like the rest of us. Well, when passengers were getting off the arriving flight, I overhear someone say, "That's Jerry Stackhouse!" At this point, I thought, whatever, I'll turn around, introduce myself, and ask. Lo and behold, it was Jerry Stackhouse!!! I guess he had been with his family in Vegas during the All Star break. So, that was the highlight of my Dallas trip.
